私の教会は「Resurrection(復活)」という名前でした。

“Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of Faith”
(Retold in readable, first-person narrative form from the reviewed Japanese translation — not a verbatim transcript.)
Here we go. Tonight I want to talk about Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Before I begin, let me wish a happy birthday to anyone celebrating today, September 2nd.
As it happens, today is also my own spiritual birthday. I owe that spiritual birthday entirely to Jesus, who has guided me ever since I was about ten years old, around the time of my confirmation. It happened on this very day, fifty-three years ago, in a prayer room much like the one at Cheongshim Won—except this one was in Texas.
Actually, it was in Austin, Texas, at a center pioneered by John Dorosky. We went to pray after I had attended a day-and-a-half workshop over a weekend. I had insisted on going to pray, even though I hadn't exactly been a model participant—I kept raising my hand and pushing back on the lecturer.
In fact, I kept interrupting him. When he was about to get into the subject of the Last Days, I asked him point-blank whether he was going to tell us that Reverend Moon was the returning Lord. Anyway, let me get to the story.
Today feels so emotional for me, because it was the day I truly met Heavenly Parent—Heavenly Father—for the first time, in that prayer room. I stayed behind afterward. I was the last person left in the room.
We had all gone in together. They lit a single candle and turned off the lights. A brother—John Dorosky—asked Jonathan Slevin to offer a prayer.
When he began to pray, it felt just like the relationship I used to have with God as a young child. I was raised Catholic, and in the church I attended, the first thing I saw whenever I walked in was a tall statue of Jesus. My parish was called Resurrection.
It was a church built around the celebration of Christ's resurrection, and true to that theme, most of the images of Jesus there showed the wounds—on his feet and hands where he had been nailed to the cross, and on his side where he had been pierced. I used to look at those feet; the wounds were painted red, and the pedestal he stood on was just low enough that, as a child, I could reach up and rest my hand on his feet. I would look up at him and try to imagine what it would take for someone pure, someone without sin, to willingly give his life for me and for everyone else.
I believe that's the reason—this comes from the Gospel of Matthew—when the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, Jesus called a little child over, set the child among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” I believe Jesus said this because children truly follow the heart.
Children are looking for love. They don't operate on some abstract notion of truth—only the true feeling in their own hearts. They move by spirit and by heart, drawn to whatever lets them sense what matters most: that they are safe, that they are loved.
That's why I believe Jesus said what he said. There are so many layers to this, but at every level it comes down to the same thing: children aren't analyzing anything—they simply live open in the realm of heart and love. My talk tonight is about Jesus, but I wanted to first bring us back to what we've been studying, because it leads directly into his words.
In what we've been studying about the value of True Parents in Heaven's providence—the essence of Jesus as the Only Begotten Son—I remember there were six points made very powerfully. I've narrowed them down here. True Parents theology comes from revelation, from heavenly truth revealed through God's Only Begotten Daughter. So everything said about Jesus as the Only Begotten Son applies equally to Hak Ja Han—Holy Mother Han—the Only Begotten Daughter.
①Jesus, the Only Begotten Son, was born inheriting Heavenly Parent's love and lineage. The birth of the Only Begotten Son is solely the result of Heavenly Parent's will—just as the birth of the Only Begotten Daughter is solely the result of Heavenly Parent's will.
But this could only happen because Jesus fulfilled these six points.
②As the Only Begotten Son, he lived according to the principles of creation and achieved complete maturity and perfection of heart.
③He was meant to become humanity's true father.
④Having reached individual perfection, he was to meet the Only Begotten Daughter at heaven's appointed time, and together, through the Holy Wedding, become the True Parents of humankind. As the Only Begotten Son, he is the one who fulfills Heavenly Parent's dream by completing himself as a true parent.
⑤And even though he faced crucifixion because the central figures who should have supported him failed him, he remained completely one in heart with Heavenly Parent until his very last moment.
⑥Jesus, the Only Begotten Son, laid a foundation so that his original responsibility could be fulfilled at the Second Coming. And it concludes with this beautiful statement: that
⑦the victorious foundation Jesus left behind as the Only Begotten Son will remain for all eternity.
It's just so amazing.
Mother really sheds this kind of light on Jesus. And if you look back at Father's words from the 1950s, you find an astonishing number of speeches, prayers, and sermons—one after another—all centered on our relationship with Jesus.
The room would become so filled with the Spirit. It was almost Pentecostal—a real opportunity to commune with Jesus and finally open our hearts.
Father was opening a window into the very heart of Jesus. I'd like to read a short quote from one of those sermons. I believe it was given under the title “Jesus Who Is to Establish Heaven's Love.”
It was delivered on Sunday, February 24, 1957: “Jesus led his life according to the rules of heavenly principle and human relationships. By going through such a life course, he was able, for the first time, to form a bond as the first human being with a love in accord with heavenly principle.
He completed the historical course of humanity. What's more, Jesus labored to bring God's love down to the level of human life. In other words, he poured out his whole disposition, his whole mind, and all of his strength to bring a love in accord with heavenly principle down to the level of human relationships.”
That resonates so deeply with the dream and the work of our True Mother. It's beautiful. Now, it was actually Paul—who was not a direct disciple of Jesus—
—through whom, especially through his letters and writings, we come to understand so much more. I think because he was out there giving his very life to testify about Jesus, he must have had to face tremendous fear within himself, and overcome it through Jesus. It's in Hebrews 12 that he writes: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
“For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Of course, other translations—like the King James Version—render that phrase as “the author and finisher of our faith.”
But the New International Version calls him “the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” I truly believe—based on what both Father and Mother have taught—that we need to think carefully about what a pioneer actually does. A pioneer blazes a trail; a pioneer cuts through and creates a path where none existed.
And the path Jesus was pioneering was the path of becoming a true son. Our Mother, too, is a pioneer and perfecter of faith—pioneering and perfecting the path of the daughter of God, the very first complete daughter of God.
A pioneer has no one to follow. Jesus said, “I only do what I see the Father doing.” But even so, he had to pray and pray and pray, again and again, to be truly certain that every step he took was a step God would be pleased with.
We also know from Hebrews—from Paul's letter to the Hebrews—that during his life on earth, Jesus offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
And once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. I simply believe Jesus was striving to be a true son. I imagine he knew he was pioneering—that his path mattered so much that he could reach a standard God would be truly pleased with.
God could find such comfort in being able to look upon a true man, a true son. And honestly, that is what drew me to Jesus in the first place. Growing up, I was bullied a lot at school, especially in elementary school.
I suppose I came across as effeminate, and I was bullied every single day—“Why do you walk like a girl? Why do you talk like a girl? Why do you act like a girl?”—even though I knew I was a boy. But somehow, in my relationship with Jesus, something told me that he was, without question, the one truly true man who ever walked this earth.
So I cried out to him and asked him to show me—to let me hold on to him so that he could guide me into becoming a true man. Would he please show me how? Would he be willing to live within my life and guide me there? I'm so grateful. I don't know what my ancestors did to deserve a relationship like that with him.
But Jesus responded. And now it's Mother—our True Mother—who is responding. She wants to respond to every single person who can be that needle, who resonates with her, who can become that son or daughter who resonates with her heart.
Oh, I meant to—I think I got my slides out of order—but I wanted to talk about the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus's most famous sermon, found in Matthew chapters five, six, and seven, though the passages I'm quoting are all from chapter five. Jesus has already given the Beatitudes at this point. Let me see if I can pull that up.
Oh, no, I guess I didn't. I might have hidden that slide for some reason—I'm not sure why.
But here is what Jesus actually said, blessing after blessing: “Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek.”
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Blessed are the peacemakers. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.”
It's almost like what we've often said in our own Unification movement—what's the appeal of joining something that deals so heavily in sorrow and hardship? But Jesus is actually saying that a true Christian endures those very same things. We already have so much to testify to as true Christians, yet here Jesus raises the bar even higher.
He's not content with the law. And he's telling every human being that we shouldn't be satisfied with the law either. The law says, “You shall not murder”—but his teaching goes far beyond that.
It reaches into how you think and feel about your brother. He says the offering you want to bring to the altar means less than reconciling with your brother first. He also speaks about adultery.
He speaks of “an eye for an eye” and turns it completely upside down, saying, “If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer him your left as well.” “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”
And of course, we all know how he concludes: “Be perfect, therefore, as your Heavenly Father in heaven is perfect”—Matthew 5:48.
But I love a different rendering of that verse—a more modern translation, and yet it resonates so strongly with what we've been discussing lately, and with standing alongside Holy Mother Han:
“Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”
I love how that's phrased. But in the end, this is what it comes down to: Jesus is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
That's what I wanted to offer tonight. In many ways it resonates even more strongly because of what we've been reading, and what each of you have been praying about. I'm so grateful that Jesus led me to our True Parents.
He had told me that I needed to help him build an ideal world of true love. And just a few months before I went to that workshop, I had met my spiritual mother right on my own front doorstep. I asked her, “What is the Unified Family?” She said, “Oh, we're a community of young Christians working to build the ideal world.”
And I said, “I'm sorry, what did you say?” So—thank you. Thank you for letting me share tonight.
